Becoming a Councillor

Become a Councillor and make a difference.....

  • Play a part in making decisions affecting your area
  • Get more involved in your community
  • Influence the way local services are provided

Councillors are ordinary people doing an extraordinary job. Stand to be a councillor to make sure decisions being made meet the needs of East Devon. We need councillors who are ready to take on a challenge - it's not a role that you can leave at the office at 5pm and not all decisions are easy to make - but you can make a positive difference. As a Councillor you will be  listening to the views of the community and helping them to be heard. We need Councillors who are:

  • Community leaders - providing direction for their area, mediating between and helping reconcile competing views and interests, encouraging and aiding people and communities to resolve local problems themselves.
  • Good communicators - to keep in touch with constituents through regular surgeries and meetings, phone, email and personal contact to know and understand their views and concerns.
  • Local champions - fostering effective relationships with public, private, voluntary and community organisations in their area and monitoring performance of public services and taking appropriate action.
  • Local advocates - influencing council and other local decisions, including planning and licensing. Acting fairly and judiciously on decisions affecting other parts of the Council's area.
