Income
Income includes the following:
| earnings | self-employed earnings |
| tax credits | all types of pensions |
| other state benefits and allowances | charitable payments |
| maintenance | voluntary payments |
| rent from renting out a room or property | fostering, adoption and other Social Services payments |
If you have a wife/husband/partner sharing your home, we count your joint incomes.
Earnings
If you and/or your husband/wife/partner are working, we need you to send in proof of your earnings to cover the last:
- five payments if you are paid weekly;
- three payments if you are paid fortnightly
- two payments if you are paid monthly.
If you are unable to supply payslips, or your payslips are hand written, please ask your employer to fill out a
a certificate of gross earnings (104KB - 30 June 2006 - PDF Help) . Alternatively, you can also ask your employer to provide a letter showing the same details as the certicate of gross earnings.
Self employment
If you and/or your wife/husband/partner are self employed, we will need to see either:
- the most recent set of accounts showing income and expenses, or
- a completed

for each self employed business.
Directors of a limited company are not classed as self employed for Housing and Council Tax benefit purposes. If you are a director, you will need to provide proof of the earnings that you receive.
Other income
We can get proof of state benefits and allowances from the Deptarment for Work and Pensions, and proof of tax credits from HM Revenues and Customs.
If you and/or your husband/wife/partner receive any other type of income, you will need to send in proof of that income. Some examples of the proofs you can supply are:
- payment slips
- notification letters
