Children and young people

Voluntary and community groups dealing with children and young people  cover a vast field of activities, ages and needs ranging from pre-school playgroups to youth clubs and support for children with special needs. The groups may need funding for capital items, such as purchasing play equipment or for revenue costs, such as salaries for paid workers. The categories listed below are:

CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE PROJECTS

Local charity  Lord Clinton's Charitable Trust has grants available from £50- £1,000 to registered charities to help them support young people and disabled people within North and East Devon, e.g. local playgroups. Money for young people  The Prince’s Trust has funding available to young people aged between 14 and 25 for a wide variety of things such as improving youth facilities or setting up sex education workshops in schools. Tesco Charity  The Tesco Charity Trust has grants of between £1,000 and £4,000 available. These grants are for practical benefits such as equipment and resources for projects that directly benefit children, the elderly and adults and children with disabilities living in communities near Tesco stores in the UK. Projects previously funded include playground equipment, sensory gardens, holiday play schemes, luncheon clubs and day trips. All sorts of causes  The Garfield Weston Foundation has grants available of between £3,000 and £1million. They support a wide variety of good causes including: education, the arts, welfare, youth, community, environment, mental health, health, religion (especially church restoration) and others. Young People Projects  The Lefevre Trust has funding of up to £10,000 available to support innovative projects between young people in France and the UK. Young People  Young Roots provides grants of between £3,000 and £25,000 to involve 13- 25 year olds in finding out about their heritage, developing skills, building confidence and promoting community involvement. This could involve projects such as getting young people volunteering as wildlife recorders or involved in a community exhibition. Connecting Youth Across Europe  Youth in Action have funding available to help young people to discover Europe. This includes Youth Exchanges, Youth Inititives and Youth Democracy Projects, European Voluntary Service, Youth in the World and Youth Support Systems. Young people  Four Acre Trust has grants from £3,000 to £75,000 available to UK registered charities who work with young people for respite breaks and holidays, vocational guidance and overseas projects. For more information: www.fouracretrust.org.uk or phone 01981 580002

Youth projects  The Wessex Youth Trust has grants available (average of £2,500 to £5,000) for projects that help support and advance young people.  Registered charities and self-help groups with charitable aims that work with young people are eligible.  To find out more phone Mrs Jenny Cannen on 02072 422022.

The Rowing Foundation has funding available to aid and support young people (under 18 or still in full time education) and the disabled of all ages through participation in sport and games, particularly water sports. For more information e-mail p.churcher@sky.com or phone 0208 878 3273

The Prince’s Trust Business Programme has low interest loans available of up to £4,000 for young people who want to start their own business. The young people must be 18- 30, unemployed or working less than 16 hours a week. As well as the loan there is free business support and access to a wide range of products and service. ‘Think Big’ is offering young people £300 of funding as well as training, support and mentoring from youth charities. The Woodland Trust has tree planting packs available for community groups, schools and youth groups. The packs contain either 105 or 420 trees and you can choose the theme of your trees. The Bike Club has funding of up to £2,000 available to charities and community groups working with children and young people. The grants are to help groups establish cycling initiatives that could benefit children and young people, for example to purchase bikes and helmets, to build places to ride e.g. BMX jumps, to provide cycling instructors. DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

The Jack Riley Trust supports young people in Devon aged 25 and under. The Trust can support individuals and new or existing youth or activity groups. Its focus is on mentoring and the personal development of young people by young people. There must be a real need of financial support. Childrens' holidays  The Henry Smith Charity has one off grants available to organisations, schools, youth groups etc of up to £3,000. Broad range of funding  The Percy Bilton Charity has funding for a wide variety of worthwhile causes. They aim to support disadvantaged young people under the age of 25, people with any kind of disability and older people (aged over 60). Only registered charities can apply. Fun and Happiness  KidsOut has grant aid available to help disadvantaged children up to the age of 18 have fun. They provide a helpine for support on many issues, play opportunities and also small grants to individuals, families, schools and groups for the purchase of special play equipment, holidays, toys and outings. Children in Need  Children in Need aims to make a positive difference to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in the UK by funding not for profit organisations. There are 3 application deadlines a year. You can find out more at: www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey

Better well-being of children  The Clara E Burgess Charity has grants available to support facilities and assistance to enhance the well-being of children particularly those under the age of 10 who have lost one or both parents. Applications can be made anytime and will be considered twice a year. For more information: 01244 625810

Children and young people in Devon  The Bloss Family Foundation has funding available to groups in Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Surrey. Your project must help children and young people aged 18 or under from deprived backgrounds and/ or are mentally and/ or physically disabled to enjoy a better quality of life. Money for charities  The Nationwide Foundation has grants available of up to £5,000 for registered charities to support them in working towards a just and caring society. The funding could be to work with those affected by domestic violence, families of people who are in prison or young people who are or have been involved in the criminal justice system. Variety Club  The Variety Club Children’s Charity has grants available to support not-for profit organisations or individuals working with sick, disabled or disadvantaged children up to 19 years of age. Wooden Spoon is dedicated to helping under-priveleged children and young people to live happier, richer lives. Previous financial support has been for sports and activity areas, sensory rooms and playgrounds and outreach programmes. For more information: www.woodenspoon.com or phone 01392 832747

Breaks 4 Kids supports under-privileged young people travelling as part of an organised group such as a school class or youth club. EDUCATION AND STUDY

Education  The Ernest Cook Trust has one-off grants of up to £10,000 available (average £1,500) for educational grants focusing on children and young people for the environment, rural conservation, the countryside, arts and crafts, literacy, numeracy and research. Money to help learning  Learning Launchpad has funding available to support groundbreaking ideas that will raise the aspirations and increase the potential of young people aged 14- 25. Education  The Equitable Charitable Trust has grants of between £2,500 and £30,000 available to support the educational needs of those under the age of 25 who are from disadvantaged backgrounds or are disabled. Grants can be for 1- 3 years for project costs, capital expenditure, equipment and/ or salary costs. LA maintained schools and individuals cannot apply. DISABLED AND SICK CHILDREN

The True Colours Trust has funding of up to £10,000 available to local organisations and projects that support disabled children and their families on a daily basis. The Devonian Fund provides grants to alleviate mobility issues in relation to disability and ill health, this grant is administered by the Devon Community Foundation. For more information see the Devon Community Foundation website: www.devoncf.com

Project funding  The Hedley Foundation has funding available for specific projects to assist and encourage development and change. Last year the average grant given was £3,000. The main aim of the project should be to support young people. They will also fund projects involving disabled people, the terminally ill and carers. Only registered charities can apply. Sick and disabled children  The Philip Green Memorial Trust have grants available to not for profit organsations, charities and individuals that help sick and disabled children. It supports the following priorities; welfare; education, medical and individuals. For more information: http://www.pgmt.org/

Families  The Family Fund Trust has financial aid and information to ease the stress experienced by families in the UK earning less than £28,000 who care for severly disabled young people up to the age of 17. Holidays, leisure activities, play equipment, telephones etc could be eligible. No uppper or lower limit of support. For more information: www.familyfund.org.uk
