EDDC's Chief Executive gets a close shave

Comic Relief

Tuesday 17 March

The Customer Service Centre at East Devon District Council has pulled out all the stops and, together with other members of staff, has raised an impressive £1,260 for Comic Relief. There were lots of people happy to do something funny for money.

Ingenious ways to raise the cash included a close shave for the Council’s Chief Executive, Mark Williams, who agreed to part with his carefully nurtured sideburns to anyone who was prepared to bid over £25.

The sideburns were duly dyed red in comic relief colours before the ceremonial shave took place in the reception area at Knowle, much to the bemusement of a few watching customers.

Customer Service Centre staff, who master-minded the fund-raising activities, were delighted to receive support from a large number of East Devon businesses* who were very generous in donating prizes for the raffle.

Cakes

Staff baked cakes on a daily basis for their colleagues who were not worrying about their waistlines – at least for a few days!  One member of staff even got her fresh, free range eggs from a member of her team who keeps her own hens.

Many of the Council’s services donated money to the charity from their own fund-raising events.  Property Services handed over £63 which was raised at their Never Too Old Christmas Bash; Information and Communications Technology (ICT) donated money raised by a leaving collection for one of their managers; and the Environmental Health team pledged substantial sums to see one of their managers relieved of his beard.

In addition, a large number of staff paid £1 each to dress up, or down, on Friday 13 March, resulting in a sea of red around the Council’s buildings.
