Go wet and wild this winter

Wednesday 03 February
For the last two years EDDC’s Countryside Service has organised a summer weekend of wildlife on the Axe Wetlands. These weekends have been so popular that the Service has decided to introduce a winter version – the Wet and Wild Winter Weekend. To make the most of the wintering birds, the event will be based around Colyford Common Local Nature Reserve and the adjacent Black Hole Marsh.
Bird watching
During the day there will be bird watching from the Colyford Common hide and around Black Hole Marsh. Experts will be on hand to describe the birds – we would expect to see a number of wigeon, redshank, teal, little egrets and maybe the flash of an irridescent kingfisher. Telescopes and binoculars will be available free of charge. There will also be guided walks - general wildlife walks around Colyford Common and Black Hole Marsh; a walk to learn about the history of the Axe Wetlands and another about the mammals of the Axe. Of course, we can’t guarantee a glimpse of the otters that are currently in residence, but who knows? They are continually surprising us with their boldness!
Getting there by tram
To get to these events, Seaton Tramway have kindly offered approximately half-priced trams from Seaton to a temporarily created halt at Black Hole Marsh where passengers will be able to disembark. Wellies and warm clothing are recommended as Colyford Common can be pretty chilly in February! Please note that there is no parking available at Colyford Common.
The daytime activities run from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday 13 February and from 10am until 4pm on both Sunday 14 February and Monday 15 February.
