Bulky Waste Items Collection
Collections
We can make a special collection to pick up large or bulky household items from outside your property.
How much does it cost?
Collections for 2008/2009 cost £45.00 including VAT per visit. There are no concessions or exceptions to this charge. The council no longer offers a free collection service. This has not been offered since 2000, when disposal charges for waste collection centres were introduced by the Government.
What will we pick up?
We will pick up most large, moveable household goods, such as furniture and white goods (freezers, washing machines, etc.). As a general rule, we will usually collect goods for which a removal van would normally be required.
No fixtures or fittings, DIY waste or vehicle parts are collected.
When you contact us to arrange a special collection, please be very specific about what you want to be collected. We will only collect the specific items you have told us you want to be picked up.
Collections will be made within seven days of receiving payment. We cannot make an appointment or give a specific time or date.
Where should I put the item/s?
Your item/s must be available for collection on your property but outside any buildings at any time during the seven days.
If you cannot put the refuse out yourself, please ask for help from a relative, friend, neighbour or local charity such as Help the Aged to assist you with lifting the refuse outside. We can collect from any accessible point outside your house (i.e. by your back door)
Alternatives to a bulky waste collection
Before calling us to ask for a special collection, please consider whether you could ask a local charity if they could recycle the item. You can contact the Devon Furniture Forum on 01752 897311 to find out where your nearest project is and what can be donated.
You could also contact one of these following local projects directly:
- Ottery St Mary RiO (Recycling in Ottery) - 01404 815825
- Exeter Turntable - 01392 202032
- Furnicare (Chard) - 01460 68221 (collect from Seaton, Musbury, Axminster, Honiton and Sidmouth)
If you have transport, you could also take your item/s to a Devon County Council amenity recycling centre (where items are generally accepted free of charge, subject to exceptions). You could also employ a private contractor, details of which can be found in the Yellow Pages.
