Council Tax 2009/10

This year we are not increasing the amount we are asking our council tax payers to pay for East Devon District Council services. This means that for 2009-2010 householders will still pay £2.27 a week (band D) for all EDDC's basic services. Your council tax bill may still go up but this will be due to the charges made by others.

The total average  weekly charge for a band D property in East Devon this year is £28.00, which is made up like this:

Devon County Council                £20.99

Devon & Cornwall
Police Authority                          £2.87

Devon & Somerset
Fire and Rescue                          £1.33

East Devon District Council         £2.27

Average town/parish                  £0.54

At £2.27 a week, East Devon's charge is the lowest of any similar authority in Devon. For comparison, the charge for Mid Devon is £3.44, North Devon £3.09, West Devon £3.60, South Hams £2.51 and for Exeter City it is £2.29. a week. East Devon’s annual band D charge at £1,456, which includes an average parish precept, is also lower than the national average for other shire districts (£1,464.63).

Council tax bills vary according to the valuation band of your property and the town or parish you live in. You can view the complete range of council tax charges for each parish in East Devon PDF file by clicking here. (45KB - PDF Help)

EDDC's collection rate for council tax last year was 98.9% - putting us among the top 15% highest performing district councils in England and second highest in Devon. In addition, last year we helped over 9,000 households with housing and council tax benefit.

East Devon District Council has set efficiency targets to ensure that we make year-on-year savings in operating costs. This year we have had to pull out all the stops to find ways of operating in a more challenging commercial environment without passing on costs to householders. We will make even better use of Government funding than before and continue to charge commercial prices for our services.

At the same time as trying to keep our council tax down, we remain committed to continuous improvement in our public services. We recognise that our staff are key to this, as demonstrated by our participation in the Investors in People (IIP) programme. Following a recent review, East Devon District Council has been congratulated on its achievement of successfully maintaining the IIP Standard with many strengths and examples of good practice noted.
