Exempt Properties

In certain circumstances some properties may be totally exempt from Council Tax. The main exemption classes are listed below. The links will provide more information and either allow you to email us with the details of your claim or provide an exemption application form. Occupied properties:-

• Occupied only by full time students - please let us know the details.
•  Occupied only by people under the age of 18 (134KB - 23 January 2012 - PDF Help)
•  Occupied only by severely mentally impaired people (142KB - 23 January 2012 - PDF Help)
•  Occupied annexe to an occupied dwelling (e.g. "Granny Annexe") (141KB - 23 January 2012 - PDF Help)
  

Unoccupied properties:-

•  Unfurnished property requiring or undergoing major structural repairs or alterations (135KB - 23 January 2012 - PDF Help) (1 year maximum limit). Newly built property (6 month maximum from substantial completion)
• Owned by a charity (up to 6 months) - please let us know the details.
•  Empty and unfurnished (up to 6 months) (135KB - 23 January 2012 - PDF Help)
•  Empty due to person being in prison (136KB - 23 January 2012 - PDF Help)
•  Empty due to person having gone to live in a care home (135KB - 23 January 2012 - PDF Help)
• Left empty by a deceased person (up to 6 months after grant of probate or letters of administration) - please let us know the details.
• Occupation prohibited by law - please let us know the details.
• Property held for a minister of religion - please let us know the details.

• Person living elsewhere to provide personal care - please let us know the details.
•  Property left empty by a student who is studying elsewhere (138KB - 23 January 2012 - PDF Help)
• Property repossessed by mortgagee - please let us know the details.
