Special rules for right to buy
Special rules apply if you want to buy your home under the Right to Buy scheme and your home is in one of the following areas:
- a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB); or
- an area designated as Rural.
When you buy a council property in these areas, the sale will be on the condition that you may have to get the Council’s permission before you sell your home or let it to someone else. You may find that this will reduce the value of your home on resale, but an allowance will have been made in calculating the original price. However, the Council cannot stop you selling or letting it to someone who has already been living or working in the area for three years.
