Who has the Right to Buy?

You gain the right to buy your council home once you have spent five years as a secure public sector tenant.  You will be able to purchase your home under the Right to Buy Scheme so long as it is your principal home and is self-contained.

You cannot buy your home if:

  • A court has made a possession order telling you to leave your home
  • You are an undischarged bankrupt
  • Have a bunkruptcy petition pending against you
  • Owe money to creditors

More information about who can exercise their right to buy can be found on page 8 of the 'PDF file Your Right to Buy Your Home (189KB - 18 April 2012 - PDF Help)' guide.
