Housing Conditions

We work to maintain good standards of housing and reduce the number of unfit homes in East Devon.

In the private rented sector we encourage landlords to keep their properties up to the highest possible standard and take enforcement action if necessary.

Houses in multiple occupation (bedsits, flats and shared houses) are an important part of the District housing stock, providing accommodation for students and single people.

We carry out programmed inspections of all properties in multiple occupation to ensure good standards of repair, amenities, management, and fire safety. Advice is available for landlords and tenants regarding the standards required.

In partnership with Devon Care and Repair, we provide a range of means-tested grants to help those in substantial need to remain comfortably in their homes. We also provide mandatory grants to assist with the adaptation of the homes of people with disabilities.
