Choice Based Lettings

Choice Based Lettings Latest News

Devon Home Choice is a new Choice Based Letting scheme that will cover the whole of Devon. Council and housing association homes available to let in Devon will be advertised through Devon Home Choice each week. You will be able to bid for homes that suit your requirements. Homes will still be offered to those assessed as being in the most need.

The 10 local authorities in Devon are working together to provide people seeking housing the opportunity to move within Devon. For example to take up a new job.

Devon Home Choice will be phased in across Devon from autumn 2009. It will be fully operational across Devon by the end of 2009.

Choice Based Lettings

The council allocate council housing through a scheme called "Choice Based Lettings". It gives you a greater choice of where to live, while continuing to meet housing needs, ensuring sustainable communities and building settled and stable communities.

The average waiting time to be rehoused from our Gold Band is four years.  This will depend on the size and type of accommodation you are requesting given the locations you shoose and the areas you need.  We have very high demand for accommodation in the seven market towns, and you may have to wait longer to be housed in these areas.

Letting vacant properties

We'll be publicising properties available for letting in the Exmouth and Midweek Herald newspapers and other locations each fortnight.

This is to make sure you're aware of the number and type of properties the Council has that are empty and ready for letting.  You can also see the advert on our website and local libraries, town and parish notice boards, or in the Knowledge newsletter.

If you want to be considered for one or more of the properties, you need to “bid” (tell us you are interested in becoming the tenant of that property).

This is how you can bid:

  • Ring 01395 517469 or 01395 516551 and ask to speak to someone in the Housing Needs team;
  • E-mail housingneeds@eastdevon.gov.uk; or
  • Call into our local office at Exmouth Town Hall or the Knowle, Sidmouth.

You can also listen to a recording of the list of available properties by ringing 01395 571512 and following the instructions to find out what's available.   If you then want to bid, you can follow the instructions on the telephone and leave a message that will be considered as your ‘bid’.

  • You can bid for as many properties as you like.
  • You can only place a bid for properties in the Gold-Silver-Bronze Band if your housing application is in the same band.  If you don't know which band you're in, please call 01395 517469 and we'll help you.
  • To place a bid you'll need to make a note of the property reference number on the advert.

Before offering the property, we will undertake a careful check to make sure the applicant has given us the correct information about their housing situation.

We will announce the category and date of the successful application on this website, and on Council and Parish Council notice boards. We will give feedback on all allocations made under the Scheme every four weeks.
