Recycling
Don’t let Devon go to waste
We all throw too much away, and we are generating more rubbish than ever; bottles, paper, packaging, etc. It only takes a minute or two to sort, but over 300,000 tonnes of our rubbish is buried in Devon every year – and the amount is growing year on year. Last year in Devon, we buried a mountain of rubbish taller than the highest tor on Dartmoor.
By not sorting our rubbish, we are wasting precious resources and throwing away useful materials that could be recycled.
Rethink Rubbish
Recycle your party rubbish – remember bottles and cans can be recycled. Newspapers, magazines, catalogues and telephone directories, envelopes, junk mail and paper can be recycled through the green boxes (if you have one) or at the recycling banks and recycling centres.
Don’t forget to recycle all your food jars, aerosols, clean foil, and even old clothes.
You can donate unwanted toys and bric-a-brac to your local charity shop, and old mobile phones can also be recycled.
Christmas trees and Christmas cards can be recycled at recycling centres too.
Visit www.recycledevon.org for more information on what can be recycled in the East Devon area or phone 0845 450 2477.
Rethink Rubbish Resolutions
Many people still do not use their boxes, so how about digging out your box, dusting it down, and using the collection service provided. To find out when your collection is, call Customer Services on 01395 517528 or check the "My Neighbourhood" section on our home page.
Are you recycling all you can? The green box collection accepts a wide range of materials, not just newspapers and bottles. Remember to recycle glass jars, cans, tins, aerosols, foil, textiles, catalogues, directories, Yellow Pages, junk mail, envelopes, paper and household batteries as well. We can also take a small amount of shredded paper, a carrier bag full per collection.

Service Improvements
The council has signed a new refuse contract with SITA, our partner in refuse and recycling. We will be introducing staged improvements to our refuse and recycling services, starting from 1 April 2006.
There will be no additional cost to the Council Tax payer for the improved service, due to the terms negotiated with SITA. The company is currently in discussions with EDDC about a number of improvements that will be phased in over the next few years.
The main emphasis of the contract is on recycling more materials. The phased approach will ensure that there is a smooth transition to such issues as:
- Recycling boxes for every household
- More frequent recycling collections
- More materials for recycling - e.g. plastic bottles
The council is responding to Government targets to recycle 27% of household waste, rising to 30% by 2010. The new service, once fully implemented, should enable the Council to comply with those targets.
