Schools
Kate Tobin, Great Trees of East Devon Project Co-ordinator, is available for school visits in East Devon. Kate can talk to classes of all ages about trees and the wildlife that depends on them - to request a visit telephone Kate on 01395 516551 ext2060 or email ktobin@eastdevon.gov.uk
Kate is offering two packages, concentrating on different aspects of East Devon’s landscape.
Great Trees
Ancient, mature or veteran trees offer great opportunities for learning. If you have any trees on your site or nearby, we can use them as a focal point for these visits. The Great Tree “package” can include any of the following aspects:
· A close look at the wildlife living in a tree
· Measuring and maths projects
· Creative writing and story telling
· Arts, including photography, drawing, leaf printing
· Environmental benefits of trees
· Have you got a Great Tree? Let’s find out more about it.
Case Study: See some work created by West Hill Primary School for a leaflet on the Great Trees of East Devon.
Case Study: Read some
poetry (19KB - PDF Help) written by Farway Primary School when they visited their local Great Tree, a 1500 year old Yew tree in the churchyard.
East Devon Orchards
Recently East Devon schools have started to take an interest in creating or restoring orchards in their grounds since it provides free healthy snacks for the children, as well as contributing to our distinctive landscape. The Orchard Package can cover some of the following:
· What’s good about eating fruit/5 a day initiatives/local recipes
· Wildlife in orchards
· Tree planting and tree care
· Arts projects
· Local history/old customs and stories
Kate may also be able to help schools find funding if they want to create or maintain an orchard themselves. You may also be able to borrow the Countryside Service apple press to allow the children to taste fantastic home made apple juice.
