Walking in the woods

The events listed here are primarily intended for tree wardens. However if you have a particular interest - perhaps you are involved in a community group or would like to get involved in a local project - you are very welcome to join us. Woodland Archaeology Course

Friday 16th March: Roundball Wood, Honiton

A training day to discover more about the Woodland Archaeology of this small woodland owned by Honiton Town Council.

Great Trees of Escot

Sunday 29th April, 11am EscotPark

Public guided walk looking at the parkland trees. Meet at the Wild Boar sculpture. Park on grass alongside wall.

Guided walk at Stoke Woods

Sunday 13th May, 11am

Walk with Allan Smart, forester for Stoke Woods, to see how the Forestry Commission are returning a conifer plantation to native broadleaved woodland. Tree Wardens and local parish councillors only.

OtterValley Association Great Tree Day 

Saturday 9th June, 1pm - 5pm: BictonCollege

An afternoon finding out more about trees, including a choice of walks around Bicton's fantastic grounds looking at ancient trees, woodland ecology and wildlife in trees. Finishes with a talk by John Wilding on how Clinton Devon Estates are managing woodlands in the Otter Valley. There is a charge for this event; please ring for booking details.

Tree Care

Thursday 14th June, 7 – 8.30pm: East Budleigh

An evening with David Colman looking at formative pruning and how to care for planted trees. Meet outside East Budleigh Village Hall.

Great Trees of East Devon: PhearPark’s Lucombe Oak

Thursday 28th June, 7 - 8.30pm: Exmouth

Public guided walk around this popular park with fantastic trees in the centre of Exmouth

Tree Preservation Orders

Thursday 19th July, 7 – 8.30pm: Seaton

An evening with David Colman discussing TPOs and how to use them, looking at some examples in Seaton. Meet at SeatonTown Hall.

Great Trees of East Devon: the Aylesbeare Lone Pine

Thursday 23rd Aug, 7pm

Meet at the car park on the A3052 opposite the RSPB heathland reserve (at grid reference SY: 056 897) to visit the Lone Pine which stands on an old tumulus close to the road. We may also take a short walk around the reserve which should be blooming at this time of year.

Yew Tree Masterclass

Friday 24th August: various E.Devon churches

Another visit to a number of ancient Yews with national expert Tim Hills. Local tree wardens will be contacted closer to the time. Will include Uplyme and Offwell.

Ancient Trees of Holyford Woods

Sunday 23rd Sept, 2-4pm: Holyford Woods

Public guided walk around this beautiful nature reserve near Colyford. Meet at SeatonTowers car park on Seaton Down Road.

Bicton Gardens Tree Day

Thurs 27th Sept: Bicton Gardens

A repeat of the successful day of tree-based events at BictonGardens and a chance to visit their Great Tree - a Grecian Fir. Normal entrance charges apply.

South West Regional Tree Warden Forum

Sat 6th October : Reed Hall, Exeter University

The annual forum for all tree wardens in the Westcountry, organised in conjunction with the Tree Council. This year, the theme is Climate Change and reducing our carbon footprint

Great Trees of East Devon: Trinity Woods’ Ancient Beeches

Fri 26th October: 11am

Meet at Trinity Hill car park to walk over the Heath and visit the Forestry Commission plantation to look at a line of impressive old Beeches. This event is part of Devon Hedge Week looking at hedgerow history and what we can learn from the landscape today.
