What is a Land Charge?

A Local Land Charge is a restriction, prohibition or financial charge on a parcel of land that is binding on successive owners/occupiers.  The Land Charges Act was introduced in 1925 with subsequent, various amendments.  In 1977 new rules were drafted and the Land Charges Act 1975 became effective.

There are twelve parts of the Local Land Charges Register:

  • Part 4 Miscellaneous Charge
  • Part 5 Fenland Ways Maintenance Charge
  • Part 6 Land Compensation Charge
  • Part 7 New Town Charge
  • Part 8 Civil Aviation Charge
  • Part 9 Opencast Coal Charge
  • Part 10 Listed Building
  • Part 11 Light Obstruction Charge
  • Part 12 Drainage Scheme Charge
