Regional Spatial Strategy for the South West

The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Hazel Blears, published the Proposed Changes to South West’s long term plan (the Draft Regional Spatial Strategy) on 22 July 2008.

The Government Office for the South West ran a consultation on the proposed phanges.  The consultation ran until 5pm Friday 24 October 2008.  The documents for consultation and all supporting information, including the Sustainability Appraisal and Habitats Regulation Assessment, are available through GOSW’s web site via the following link:

A judgement following legal challenges to the East of England RSS pointed to a deficiency in the way the Sustainability Appraisal (SA) for that RSS had addressed the testing of reasonable alternatives.  In the light of that judgement the Government has commissioned additional SA work for the South West RSS.  The additional work is expected to be completed in March 2010.  Ministers will then decide how to progress the RSS which may include additional consultation.
