Political Composition

The Council consists of 59 Councillors who represent 32 electoral wards  The political composition of the Council is: Conservatives: 43; Liberal Democrats: 10; Independents: 6.

The Work of the Council & Committees

The work of the full Council includes deciding overall policies, setting budgets, agreeing constitution changes and appointing the Leader, Deputy Leader and the Cabinet.
Council
Full Council meetings are held four times a year. The annual meeting is held in May to elect the Council committees and to appoint the Chairman, Vice Chairman and the Council Leader.  The full Council is the only body which has the power to amend the Council's constitution, change policy and to appoint Council committees, Portfolio Holders and Member Champions.

Public Access to Meetings

Members of the public are welcome to attend any meeting for the duration of matters listed on the agenda unless a statutory exclusion means that the matter cannot be considered in public.  Members of the public are also welcome to speak at Committes.  If you have specific needs e.g. mobility problems you will find that the civic suite, including the main Council Chamber and Committee Room, are on ground level with no steps providing easy wheelchair access. For meetings held in the Council Chamber, a hearing loop is active. Hearing aid users please switch to the ‘T’ position.
