Declarations of Interest
All members and co-opted Members of District and Parish Councils are required by law (The Local Government Act 2000) to complete a register of interests form to register their financial and other interests. Members have to complete their register of interests within 28 days of being elected.
The information includes :
- Details of any employment or business carried on by them;
- The name of their employer;
- Details of people who have paid towards election expenses;
- Contracts between themselves/their firm and the Council;
- Interests in any land in the area; details of any directorships.
The Register of Interests
The full register is maintained by the Council’s Democratic Services section under the supervision of the Monitoring Officer and is available for public inspection, by appointment with Democratic Services, between the hours of 9.00 am and 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday at the Council Offices, Knowle , Sidmouth. The registers of interest for a Town or Parish Council are also held by the Parish Clerk to that Council.

Members are also required to state any interests that they may have in an item when it is discussed at one of the Council's Committees. Such declarations are recorded in the minutes of that meeting and open to public scrutiny. There are two different types of interest a councillor may have in an item and these may or may not prevent that Councillor from speaking or remaining within the meeting.
