Information for Older People
Older People in East Devon
We are well aware of the high percentage of our residents who are over 60 and it is in their interests that we focus our attention on objectives such as a safe, clean and green environment, excellent service for our customers and supporting a thriving economy.
Older people experience the same issues, needs and concerns as the rest of East Devon's 'adult residents'. However, as we age the likelihood of ill health, disability, poor mobility, and being unable to drive, or bereavement, may affect us or a partner. Despite our low crime rates and friendly communities, feelings of vulnerability and isolation may increase.
EDDC has a track record of catering for the needs of its older population.
Low council tax rises - among the lowest in the country - are one example of our commitment to looking after the interests of all our householders, but especially those on low incomes and pensions.
Others are our much envied Home Safeguard community alarm service and our sheltered housing schemes for the elderly and vulnerable.
We also have a concessionary bus passes scheme that has achieved exactly the right balance between helping those on low incomes to remain mobile without raising council tax or getting into debt. Sound monetary management ensures that EDDC is able to serve all of its residents from a solid financial base.
