Play Areas

East Devon District Council currently provides, manages and maintains 71 equipped play areas throughout the district. Of these, 57 are under the Environment Portfolio and 15 are under the Communities portfolio. 3 of the areas are managed in partnership with Town and Parish Councils.

Many facilities are categorised under the National Playing Field Association Six Acre Standard for Local Area of Play (LAP),  Local Equipped Area of Play (LEAP) and Neighbourhood Area of Play (NEAP). Ranges of play equipment provided caters for pre-school age children, 4-12 year olds,  and 5 skateparks and 4 multi-use games areas (MUGA's) aimed at older children and teenagers.
The purpose of the service is to provide clean, safe but challenging areas of play to enhance the health and social development of local and visiting children alike throughout East Devon and are designed to give children a variety of activities ranging from traditional swings and slides to using climbing walls and balancing equipment.

All play areas are inspected on a weekly basis and any minor repair works are carried out at the time of inspection. Maintenance also involves grass cutting, litter picking and litter bin emptying.

Play areas are signed onsite identifying the name of the play area, gives advice on appropriate byelaws and in the event of incident or vandalism gives the contact number of the Authority.
