New changes to your Refuse and Recycling Service

During 2009 and 2010 we are rolling out a new Refuse and Recycling service across the district to help East Devon increase the amount we recycle and decrease the amount of waste going to landfill.

What does the new service include?

- Plastic bottles will be accepted in the green box for recycling.
- Each property will receive a food waste collection.
- Each property will be issued a wheeled bin to contain their landfill waste.
- The recycling and food waste will be collected weekly.
- The landfill bin will be collected every fortnight.

When will it affect each area and how will you know?

We have already started this new service in the areas collected on a Monday and Tuesday. This has proved a success with a recycling rate now over 50%! We expect these changes to be completed across the rest of the district by the end of 2010. We will notify residents with all the information they will need with leaflets, road shows and articles in the local papers before we issue the bins.

Why is this happening?

All councils across the UK need to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill as we are running out of space to put our refuse. To achieve this targets have been set which have severe financial penalties which if enforced would dramatically affect the amount of Council Tax to be paid. By recycling more we can help resources last longer and give us time to look at new technologies to further reduce waste being put in the ground.
