Side Waste (Landfill)

Landfill wasteEast Devon District Council will only collect landfill waste that is placed in the container provided. We will not collect unauthorised side waste.

What is side waste?
Side waste is excess landfill waste that has not been placed into the landfill waste container. This usually results in bags of landfill waste being placed on top of or to the side of the landfill bin.

Why is side waste not collected?
We do not collect side waste as we are working hard to reduce the amount of waste that is going to landfill. Taking excess waste does not encourage people to recycle.
Waste that is not contained also encourages animals to attack the bags and this results in litter being spilt onto the streets.

What if I don't have any room in my bin for any more landfill waste?
If you are struggling with your waste then please look at the advice below. If you have done all you can but are still having difficulties then please contact us by calling 01395 571515 or by email waste@eastdevon.gov.uk

Tips to reduce waste

Recycling - Check everyone in the home knows what can be recycled in the green box and food caddy. Print out PDF file a list of what East Devon can recycle in the green box (160KB - 08 August 2011 - PDF Help) and stick it on the fridge! You can have up to 3 recycling boxes and food caddies and we will accept excess recycling in plastic bags (not black bags) or a container no bigger than the green box.

Plastic packaging and Tetra Pak juice cartons - These can be recycled at your nearest recycling centre. If they have to go in the landfill bin please flatten them.

Cardboard - This can now be recycled at the Tesco stores in Honiton, Exmouth and Seaton or at your nearest local recycling centre. If it does have to go into the landfill bin please flatten or break it up.

Compression - Compress the bin liners before they go in the bin, air takes up a lot of space!

Sideways - Placing the bags in the bin sideways does take up less room.
