Orchard by Edwina Bridgeman

A Touring Exhibition By New Brewery Arts, Cirencester

4 July – 29 August 2009

detail 2

Over the past twenty years many towns, villages and hamlets have lost orchards in their hundreds. These were once the focal point of community life, and valued as natural havens. An orchard is home to a variety of trees, plants, birds, insects and lichens as well as memory, emotion and magic. In this exhibition, Edwina Bridgeman re-creates the experience of being in one of these contemplative spaces, as distilled through her own vision. The viewer is invited to enter and enjoy.

Orchard is a radical new installation featuring three full sized orchard trees, a magical prop, a grazing sheep and a host of hidden wildlife, made out of discarded and undervalued everyday materials which are transformed by the artist. At the centre is a five foot ‘Tree of Life’ made from an old hat-stand covered in figures and animals, with Adam and Eve at the base. Over 20 smaller works re-create myths and stories associated with orchards.

Visitors will be encouraged to sit and write, draw, or compose poems about their memories of apple picking, cider drinking etc. at a battered old writing table under an apple bough. The artist will use these resources to make future works so the exhibition will grow as it tours around Britain.

Double Elephant – Print workshop

Boxes

30 May – 1 August 2009

Double Elephant

Using identical Perspex boxes, printmakers from Double Elephant print workshop, based in Exeter, have produced a series of unique works of art, each box presenting the individual artist with an opportunity to stamp their own identity and individual style of working within a small, uniform 'space.' The Double Elephant boxes are for sale. They also make an intriguing display in our illuminated showcases.

THELMA HULBERT GALLERY FEASIBILITY STUDY

On 2 October 2008 the Executive Board agreed the unanimous recommendation from Corporate Overview (Feasibility Study Option 2); that the finances be found to allow the authority (after taking back the ground floor of Elmfield House from the current lease holder) to expand the gallery and staffing to cover new activity throughout the whole building and ancillary areas. This will follow a business plan that, over four phases, and with grant aid, creates better financial viability and better opportunity, enhances Honiton, provides a better learning environment, better engages the local community and creates a cultural hub for future activity across East Devon.

Ishbel Ramsay, Arts Development, East Devon District Council 6 October 2008
