The Devon Tenant Participation Group's (DTPG) Young Persons Event

The DTPG held a Young Persons Event at Plymouth Pavilions on Tuesday 13 April 2010.  East Devon District Council secured three places on this event and Jane Reading, Tenant Participation officer took three young people aged between 10 and 16 years old.

The day started with a short introduction by Kate Weeks a DTPG member. The day was then passed on to the Stiltskin Theatre Group leading an interactive drama workshop around what happens in our neighbourhoods and communities. We broke up into small groups and then took part two separate workshops “acting the picture and a short play.  We all had to draw a picture of something happening on our community and then act out this picture. Then we all produced a short 5 minute play again based on what is happening in our communities.

After this the DTPG undertook an interactive question session with the young people, called Quizdom. The young people held handsets and had multiple answers to questions such as: do you live in a house or a flat? Do you have a garden? What is the most important thing about where you live? What do dislike most about your area? This part proved very challenging for the members of the DTPG who are not as good at this sort of thing as our young participants. Some of the answers were very interesting and will be published in the next edition of Partnership News.

After lunch the young people were able to choose to either go ice skating or swimming for the afternoon as a reward for all their hard work they had produced in the morning session. Most chose ice skating and watching from the public viewing area I saw some very talented young ice skaters. The majority of the young people said they enjoyed the day and would be willing to attend a similar event in future.

This was an ideal opportunity for Registered Providers to engage with young people and find out their views on matters such as:

What is important to them

  • What do they like about the area they live in
  • What issues are of interest to them
  • What mechanisms can Registered Providers offer to persuade young people involved
  • How they would like to be consulted in the future

East Devon Community Researcher

Tenants from East Devon have recently undertaken training provided free by South West Foundation and have learnt how to become Community Researchers.

As part of the training a Community Research project around Support Services received by tenants living in council homes and receiving support from either Mobile Support Officers or Resident Scheme Managers.

On Friday 19th March, 2010,  the research group presented the findings of their research to the Head of Housing and Social Inclusion, other officers, tenants from East Devon and Mid Devon District Council and officers and board members from South West Foundation.

A copy of the PDF file presentation (120KB - 16 April 2010 - PDF Help)  and photo (66KB - 16 April 2010) of the day can be viewed here.

John Golding Head of Housing and Social Inclusion said

” Myself and the service managers appreciated the care and attention given to the research and presentation.  There were some pleasing messages you detected from residents/service users, but also areas where we need to improve our services.

I am keen that we respond positively to the areas highlighted for improvement.  We clearly need to communicate better on changes to the service and explain the reason for change.  The Road shows we are doing can help in this regard.

I am keen for the newly acquired research skills in other areas, and consider how this can complement the Tenant Scrutiny role we need to develop together.”
